King For A Day (extract)

Down by the shore, Skye clasped a large bowl.  She had caught some of the gushing blood.  Later, it would be poured on the fields. The three women watched the fire burn merrily.  After the fire had died down, Skye cut off the smoking head and threw it to the hounds, who had gathered a short distance away.  There was now one extra figure in the pack.  They fought hungrily for the head, and one of the shapes, wearing the recently-shredded remnants of clothing, seized the trophy and carried it off, gnawing strips of flesh from it as the last rays of the sun slid beneath the horizon.
